Is Mac Mail a POP3 or IMAP?
iCloud Mail uses the IMAP and SMTP standards supported by most modern email client apps. iCloud Mail does not support POP.
Mac.com supports IMAP / SMTP
This means you don't have to use Mac.com's webmail interface! You can check your email and send messages using other email programs (like Mailspring, Outlook Express, Apple Mail, or Mozilla Thunderbird). Using desktop email applications can improve your workflow.
You can find out whether your email is POP or IMAP by checking your email client. Open your email account settings and it will usually indicate if you're set up for POP or IMAP.
POP3 is more secure than IMAP since it uses SSL/TLS encryption by default. This means that your passwords and email data are safe from eavesdroppers.
Apple Mail is quick to set up. It's a basic email client with support for a range of services, including the company's own iCloud Mail, Gmail, Yahoo! Mail, Exchange, and AOL Mail.
Icloud.com (Apple iCloud) IMAP Server | imap.mail.me.com |
---|---|
IMAP port | 993 |
IMAP security | SSL / TLS |
IMAP username | Your username |
IMAP password | Your Icloud.com password |
An IMAP path prefix tells your mail client where to look for your mail. Most clients will automatically set up the IMAP prefix with no issues. When the IMAP prefix is not properly set up you won't receive mail at all, or your mail will appear inside an extra Inbox folder.
Enter your incoming mail server information: Hostname is mail.yourdomain.com. Username is your full email address.
POP3 is still widely used today. However, an alternative protocol was created only a few years after the first version of POP. This one was called Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP).
Double click on the email account which you would like to check (if you only have one, then only one will be listed) Then, check the port numbers listed: 995 and 110 are POP3 ports. All other port numbers are IMAP. If there is no port number listed and you can see the Server URL then it is an Exchange account.
Will I lose emails if I change from POP to IMAP?
Switching from a POP3 connection to an IMAP account could delete your existing emails. To avoid losing anything important, you should create a backup of your mailboxes.
While POP3 can work well for single devices, IMAP is the better option in case you ever need to use a new device. If you are using POP3 and lose access to your main device, you would also lose access to all your past emails. That's why we recommend using IMAP in this instance, instead of POP3.

IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol)
The main disadvantage of the IMAP protocol is that it is mandatory to have an internet connection on all the time to read/reply and search the messages.
POP3 only allows a single device at a time to access the emails. IMAP allows multiple devices at a time to access and read the available mails. A user cannot update or create emails on the mail server by using the POP3 protocol. You can use the IMAP protocol for updating or creating emails.
Outlook is more organized, secure, and stable, whereas Apple mail is simple and much easier to use. Overall, both have their merits and demerits based on which you can choose the one that fits your needs. We have discussed the major pros and cons of both email clients in this article.

If you have an iPhone, iPad, or Mac and don't use a Gmail email address, the choice is simple: use Apple Mail. The Gmail app just isn't great at handling other email services. Apple Mail is also the clear winner if you have multiple accounts from different email providers and want to use one app to manage them all.

How do I find my IMAP code?
Android (native Android email client)
Select your email address, and under Advanced Settings, click Server Settings. You'll then be brought to your Android's Server Settings screen, where you can access your server information.
Specifying Port Numbers
If you enable the IMAP service, you can specify the port number that the server is to use for IMAP connections. The default is 143.
In the left side-bar, click on the Account for your email. Select Account Information towards the top. Find the field for Incoming Mail Server. This is your IMAP server name.
Physical Address: Refers to the physical address of the Ethernet connection to your computer or server. This may also be referred to as your MAC (Media Access Control) Address, Host ID or Server ID.
To change these settings in the Mail app on your Mac, choose Mail > Settings, click Accounts, click Server Settings, click the outgoing Account pop-up menu, then choose Edit SMTP Server List.
