Is M2 chip more powerful than M1?
Compared with the M1, the M2 delivers 18% greater multicore CPU performance, up to two extra GPU cores, 50% increase in memory bandwidth, 25% higher graphics performance at the same power level as M1 and up to 35% higher performance at its max, 25% increase in transistor count, 2.3x faster performance at the same power ...
The MacBook Air M2 is the better laptop, but the MacBook Air M1 is close behind. If you can afford to spend $200 more, the MacBook Air M2 is the better pick. It has a separate charging port, a brighter screen, a better webcam and keyboard, significantly more battery life, and slightly more performance power.
In our testing, the M2 has an 18 percent faster CPU than the M1. The new chip doesn't just mean that the new Macs can accomplish more though, they use less power doing so: Apple promises an increased CPU performance of 18 percent with the same energy consumption thanks to various optimizations.
M2 vs M1 Ultra
The GPU is up to 64 cores, and is likely 5x faster than the M2. There are four media engines, too. In fact, the M1 Ultra will actually beat the M2 in every way, including the Neural Engine, because it has two 16-core Neural Engines.
The most obvious reason to wait for the new MacBook Pro laptops is for the rumored M2 Pro and M2 Max chips. If these processors offer the same kind of upgrade seen from the original Apple M1 chip to the Apple M1 Pro and Apple M1 Max chips, they should provide a noticeable boost over the current M2 processor.
Apple says that the βM2β chip takes the performance per watt of the M1 even further with an 18 percent faster CPU, a 35 percent more powerful GPU, and a 40 percent faster Neural Engine. There are also other significant enhancements such as more memory bandwidth and support for up to 24GB of unified memory.
Even though they're built on the same 5nm node, the M2 comes with slightly higher clock speeds: 3.49Ghz compared to M1's 3.2Ghz. This, in turn, has resulted in a 12% increase in single-core performance and up to a whopping 20% in multi-core (Geekbench 5).
The only difference between the MacBook Pro M2 and MacBook Pro M1 is the included chip. As their names suggest, the former packs the all-new M2 chipset, while the former goes for the M1 β which Apple introduced back in 2020.
The βM1β Max has a 10-core CPU that includes eight high performance cores and two high efficiency cores. According to Apple, the βM1β Max's 10-core CPU is up to 70 percent faster than the 8-core CPU in the original βM1β chip, which featured four high performance cores and four high efficiency cores.

Is the M2 better than the M1 Pro?
The βM2β levelled the playing field in some senses by adopting the capabilities of the βM1 Proβ's dedicated media engine and the chip is more powerful in single-core tasks with its higher 3.49GHz CPU clock speed, but the βM1 Proβ is considerably better in multi-core and graphics tasks.
The new MacBook Air M2 is here. Like the recently released MacBook Pro M2, this new notebook is the latest to feature the Apple M2 chip β making it one of the most performant and overall best laptops you can buy. Despite its steep $1,199 starting price, it's arguably worth every penny due to the value it provides.
