Why is my DVD-R not writable?
You can try running the DVD troubleshooter and check. If the disc you inserted is identified as "Blank disc" in the Navigation pane but a message in the List pane instructs you to insert a writable disc, the disc might be defective or no longer writable. You can try using other blank discs and check if it works.

DVD-RW and DVD+RW discs can be rewritten, but they must be erased each time you want to record new data on them. To summarize, look for discs ending in "-R" if you want single-use recordable CDs or DVDs. Look for "-RW" if you want discs that you can use more than once.
A write-protected DVD-RW disc can be reformatted after being erased. Right-click the DVD drive and select "Erase" from the drop-down menu. In some cases, you may need to erase individual files or folders from the right pane.
Please try again later. DVD-R and DVD+R are nearly identical formats. The discs look the same and are both supported by most DVD-ROM drives and DVD burners. The only difference between the formats is the way they determine the location of the laser beam on the disc.
It is estimated that a DVD-RW or DVD+RW disc can be rewritten approximately 1000 times and a DVD-RAM 100,000 times. In addition, these formats (under certain circumstances) employ defect management schemes to actively verify data and skip over or relocate problems to a spare area of the disc.

With DVDs, you don't get a perfect copy, just a lossy video file, so an ISO is the most future-proof option. However, an MPEG-2 file that matches the original (just in a different wrapper, as it were) is almost as good.

DVD-R discs will play in stand-alone DVD players, DVD recorder/player devices and computer DVD-ROM drives.
DVD-Video information recorded onto a DVD-R General tends to have a playback compatibility of about 90 to 95 percent with all players that exist. This is the highest compatibility among all burned DVD formats.
Most DVDs store movies in the standard MPEG-2 format (aka H. 262) defined by the Motion Pictures Expert Group, though MPEG-1 is also supported. The video is held in VOB (Video Object) files. The video is interlaced for display on ordinary TV sets.
